I might be biased but I’ve been a fan of Padma Lakshmi since the first season of Top Chef。 I also thoroughly enjoyed her new series Taste the Nation on Hulu。The recipes in this book are so vibrant and fresh。 I love the way Lakshmi takes all the influences from her life, travels, and family and incorporates them into her cooking。The recipes are easy to follow with notes on ingredients and appropriate substitutions。 I also love her extra notes on how kids can help with preparing, too。The dessert c I might be biased but I’ve been a fan of Padma Lakshmi since the first season of Top Chef。 I also thoroughly enjoyed her new series Taste the Nation on Hulu。The recipes in this book are so vibrant and fresh。 I love the way Lakshmi takes all the influences from her life, travels, and family and incorporates them into her cooking。The recipes are easy to follow with notes on ingredients and appropriate substitutions。 I also love her extra notes on how kids can help with preparing, too。The dessert chapter surprised me the most and in the best way。 I usually find dessert recipes lacking in these types of cookbooks but this one was impressive。 The variety ranges from spiced cookies to fruity granitas。 The rose petal and pistachio ice cream recipe is worth the price of admission alone。 I highly recommend this one to readers who collect cookbooks, Top Chef fans, and anyone who wants to diversify their dinners at home with recipes that anyone can try。Thank you to Hachette and Hachette Go for the gifted paperback copy。 。。。more

Tangy Tart Hot and Sweet: A World of Recipes for Every Day by Padma Lakshmi is full of delicious and tasty recipes that are easy to follow。 The instructions are well written and flexible。 The author gives you the option to use your preferred ingredients, and if you don't have fresh fruit, then canned is okay。 I can't wait to try more recipes。  Tangy Tart Hot and Sweet: A World of Recipes for Every Day by Padma Lakshmi is full of delicious and tasty recipes that are easy to follow。 The instructions are well written and flexible。 The author gives you the option to use your preferred ingredients, and if you don't have fresh fruit, then canned is okay。 I can't wait to try more recipes。  。。。more

Cooks at home jere you go- flexible, affordable and adaptable recipes by the wonderful Padma。 I love Padma …she has created a book where I already envision moving one sauce to this and one protein to that。。。lots of room for the creativity of your own home and your own palette to work with jere。 With kids most days need to get good tasting yet healthy food for them on the table with time and budget constraints。 I have flagged many recipes and this will be put to use immediately!

i didn’t want to give this book a rating, as i’m not sure i’m the right person, but overall i’m disappointed in how inflexible and meat heavy the recipes were。 even the vegetarian section of the book was small and still included non vegetarian ingredients :( of the entire book, there’s only two recipes that i think i could try slash are useable (for me)。

great cookbook for girls weekends。。。。。LOVE THIS。

I have had a girl crush on Padma since season 2 of Top Chef and I found this AUTOGRAPHED book at a used books sale。 I squealed and nearly gave a poor elderly woman across the aisle a heart attack。 Padma infused her recipes with a lovely story。 A few of the recipes I've tried are perfectly balanced, as the title suggests。 Can't wait to try them all! What a heartfelt cookbook full of nurturing recipes! After cooking and eating yet another amazing recipe from this cookbook tonight, I had to write a review。 I got this cookbook as a college graduation present。 I was initially turned off by the complicated list of ingredients, but finally decided to try out the Passata of White Beans and Sage: today it’s one of my go-to recipes! Now that I live in Nairobi, many more of the Indian and Thai ingredients are cheap and readily accessible, so I’m even more enamored than ever。 But even when the ingredients were tough to track down, the end result is WORTH IT。 Every single recipe (bar one。。。 but I made some liberal substitutions) I’ve made out of this book has been not just good, but WOW。 The flavor profiles are complex and often tangy, tart, hot, AND sweet at the same time (note, these recipes are generally not for those with an aversion to heavy chilies and spice!)。 Cue most impressive dinner party you’ve ever hosted。 The fusion between Thai, Indian, and Mexican cuisines also helps the book stay “fresh” for me。。。 even though I cook dinner out of it every week。 I would highly recommend anything out of the seafood section。 Perhaps the only segment that seems lacking is Desserts。。。 but then again, by that point I’m already full! 。。。more

Canned is okay。This book reads like a memoir but most in our group weren't interested in her essays relating her various experiences with food。 Also, we would have preferred more photos of finished recipes than her family or ingredients especially if it meant that the additional space could have been used to increase the font size of the measurements (!)。 It was interesting to note that not one of the 10 participants viewed the reality show Top Chef that Lakshmi co-hosts。Lakshmi incorporates chilies into a large percentage of her recipes。 The fact that she doesn't share the spiciness level of each recipe was a little disappointing for those of us who are sensitive to peppers。 She celebrates food and clearly enjoys it but doesn't go so far as to make the experience with the reader an educational one。We sampled the following recipes。。。- Red Snapper with Green Apple and Mint Chutney- Spiced Candied Pecans- Honeycomb and Fig Ice Cream- Pochettes of Feta, Basil and Tomatoes- Stefano's Roasted Potatoes- White Sangria- Mexican Cornbread- BBQ Korean Short Ribs- Jamaican Johnny Cake- Cauliflower with Anise and Cashews- Curried Long Beans with Black Eyed Peas- Sweet Potatoes and Sauteed Lima Beans- Basil and Blood Orange Salad- Homemade Hot ChocolateEveryone loved the pecans, the ice cream and the pochettes。 All the other recipes had mixed levels of appreciation。Readers may have difficulty initially connecting with the recipes in this book, but we think that with a little time and effort you will find a recipe (or two or three) that you will enjoy。 。。。more

This book surprised me。 I don't watch Top Chef, so I knew very little about Lakshmi。 I know a bit more now since she includes essays sharing her personal history as it relates to food。 This makes the book a little bit of a memoir too。I made the following recipes。。。- Red Snapper with Green Apple and Mint Chutney - I liked it, but I will ask the fish monger/butcher (what do you call the person behind the fish counter at the grocery store?!) to be sure to take the bones out next time。 It wasn't ple This book surprised me。 I don't watch Top Chef, so I knew very little about Lakshmi。 I know a bit more now since she includes essays sharing her personal history as it relates to food。 This makes the book a little bit of a memoir too。I made the following recipes。。。- Red Snapper with Green Apple and Mint Chutney - I liked it, but I will ask the fish monger/butcher (what do you call the person behind the fish counter at the grocery store?!) to be sure to take the bones out next time。 It wasn't pleasant having to remove them as I ate。- White Sangria - very sweet and yummy。 I really liked the addition of tropical fruit - pineapple, mango, kiwi。 I substituted a Portuguese white wine instead of Spanish。- Mexican Cornbread - This cornbread is chock full of ingredients。。。chorizo, pickled jalapenos, monterey jack cheese and corn。 Since I'm a bit of a wimp with peppers, I cut the jalapenos back by half and really enjoyed it。 I actually chose to make this recipe because it called for sprinkling sumac on top of the bread after it bakes。 I now have a lifetime supply of sumac after my experience with Jerusalem by Ottolenghi, so I jumped at the chance to deplete my stash!- Honeycomb and Fig Ice Cream - OMG Good! Strong vanilla flavor with mellow fig and honeycomb。 Seriously you can eat honeycomb。This isn't an educational book。 Lakshmi enjoys food and is an enthusiastic guide。 She is flexible with substituting ingredients。 She incorporates chilies into a lot of recipes。 This may be off putting to some cooks, but you can decrease the amounts and/or find recipes without them。I wish Weinstein Books would have increased the font size for the ingredient measurements。 These 50+ year old eyes had a hard time deciphering the correct measurement (especially fractions)。 。。。more

there were a lot of unfamiliar ingredients (for me): persian omani dried lemons that were so black they looked like rocks, asafetida powder (an onion/garlicky herby seasoning), amchoor (dried mango powder), anar dana (dried pomegranate seeds), etc。 while their inclusion could be annoying (there are plenty of indian grocery stores near me but i have no idea if they actually carry this stuff), i found it interesting。 many of her recipes seemed to require a lot of ingredients (though they seemed fa there were a lot of unfamiliar ingredients (for me): persian omani dried lemons that were so black they looked like rocks, asafetida powder (an onion/garlicky herby seasoning), amchoor (dried mango powder), anar dana (dried pomegranate seeds), etc。 while their inclusion could be annoying (there are plenty of indian grocery stores near me but i have no idea if they actually carry this stuff), i found it interesting。 many of her recipes seemed to require a lot of ingredients (though they seemed fairly reasonable time-wise)。excited to try her singapore noodles (88), chicken a la nueces de la india (110), and lamb meatballs in creamy spinach sauce (160)。 her asian-leaning recipes appealed to me more than the other ones, even though it seemed like curry powder and chilis dominated the flavor profiles。 。。。more

Much better than her first book。 This one has plenty of stories (like the last), but many more pictures and the recipes seem a bit more approachable。 If I ever find that I like lychees, I want to try her lychee ice cream。

I was impressed with how accessible some of these recipes were, and the wide range of Lakshmi's international interests。 The photos are gorgeous, though the ones of her modeling walking down the street are gratuitous unless you're a fan of her celebrity status。 Get past that, and these recipes are great。 The stories behind them are charming as well。 Pleasantly surprised by this book。 I was impressed with how accessible some of these recipes were, and the wide range of Lakshmi's international interests。 The photos are gorgeous, though the ones of her modeling walking down the street are gratuitous unless you're a fan of her celebrity status。 Get past that, and these recipes are great。 The stories behind them are charming as well。 Pleasantly surprised by this book。 。。。more

As a child whenever we drove through a tunnel my parents would tell me to duck my head。 One day while in the car with my perfect beautiful friend she said that in her family they held their breath。 I wondered if I held my breath while going through a tunnel I might become beautiful like her。 Of course this then required breath holding and head ducking。 Now I don't think that eating like Padma Lakshmi will make me look like her but the recipes contained in this book just might be worth the effort As a child whenever we drove through a tunnel my parents would tell me to duck my head。 One day while in the car with my perfect beautiful friend she said that in her family they held their breath。 I wondered if I held my breath while going through a tunnel I might become beautiful like her。 Of course this then required breath holding and head ducking。 Now I don't think that eating like Padma Lakshmi will make me look like her but the recipes contained in this book just might be worth the effort。 If the results don't pan out at least I'll have eaten well! 。。。more

I own this book solely as an overflow of my love for Top Chef, let's be serious。 With that out of the way, though, this book is terrific。 Lakshmi presents a variety of dishes, including sauces that a home cook can use with other recipes, vegetarian options, and even a collection of beverages。 Most of the dishes have an international flavor, with a complex list of spices and cooking techniques, but they all seem simple enough to attempt, and I love that Lakshmi suggests substitutions for those of I own this book solely as an overflow of my love for Top Chef, let's be serious。 With that out of the way, though, this book is terrific。 Lakshmi presents a variety of dishes, including sauces that a home cook can use with other recipes, vegetarian options, and even a collection of beverages。 Most of the dishes have an international flavor, with a complex list of spices and cooking techniques, but they all seem simple enough to attempt, and I love that Lakshmi suggests substitutions for those of us without access to Middle Eastern grocery stores or similar shopping opportunities。 Lakshmi also indulges her poetic side a bit with introductions to nearly every dish, along with occasional breezy recollections of memorable culinary vacation moments or childhood anecdotes or stories about her college days。 The photography was not exactly to my liking, as the feel was generally messy, with extreme close-ups and curious angles and foods with a lot of brown tones - I'm sure the food tastes and smells intoxicating, but I am a little too detail-oriented (you can say OCD if you want) to really embrace the visuals of this book。 Many readers will likely enjoy the photography, though, as my reaction was simply a matter of personal visual preference, and I think every reader can enjoy the creativity and personal expression provided in these recipes, and I recommend the book even for people who are not yet fans of Top Chef。 。。。more
